Redmen give strong effort despite what scoreboard says

WEST PORTSMOUTH — If the final score could talk, it wouldn’t be silent about the Rock Hill Redmen.

Despite losing 42-6 Friday to the unbeaten Portsmouth West Senators, Redmen coach Todd Knipp wasn’t totally disappointed.

Besides losing starting quarterback Will McCollister on the second play of the second quarter and not having his backup Jake Brown due to an illness, Knipp saw a lot of good signs.

“We played pretty well. We finally played physical. We were attacking. We played hard, but we were limited to what we could do offensively,” said Redmen coach Todd Knipp.

The offense finished with 182 total yards, 113 on the ground. The Redmen were forced to use running back Josh Malone at quarterback, a position he hasn’t played since the fourth qrade.

“We really had our hands tied offensively,” said Knipp. “It was one of the first times we’ve fought through adversity. The score didn’t indicate how well they did perform.”

The Redmen trailed just 14-0 at the half, but Alf Bricker broke a 73-yard touchdown run to start the second half and give West some breathing room.

Rock Hill had the ball twice inside the 20-yard line following fumble recoveries but could not capitalize.
