South Point ground game too much for Point Pleasant

POINT PLEASANT, W.Va. — Run, Run, Run was the theme Friday night as the South Point backfield amassed 456 yards on 56 attempts en route to a 34-26 win over the Point Pleasant Big Blacks.

“This win is a big lift for the team, and I could not be more proud of the kids. Our coaching staff did great job this week getting the team prepared,” said Pointers coach Doug Shilot.

“You have to have mental toughness, and our kids responded, bowed their necks and we are happy to get the win.”

South Point (1-3) did not waste any time getting the motor going as Doug Dillon broke a 46-yard run on the first play from scrimmage. Dillon capped off the drive nine plays later when he scored from three yards out and it was 6-0.

The Pointers had a chance to score but fumbled at the Point Pleasant 7-yard line. Point Pleasant took advantage of the recovery as speedy Allen Wasonga raced 92 yards to the South Point one. Derek Mitchell found the end zone on the next play and the Justin Weaver’s put the Big Blacks up 7-6 with 10:17 left in the half.

South Point regained the lead when Jacob Seagraves scored from 26 yards out. The conversion failed and it 12-7.

However, Wasonga showed his speed again taking the ensuing kickoff back 85 yards go give Point Pleasant a 13-12 lead.

Point Pleasant recovered another Pointer fumble at the 26, but South Point’s defense held and forced Weaver to kick a 23-yard field goal and it was 16-12 at the half.

The Pointers continued their momentum when Seagraves was stripped, and the Big Blacks recovered

“We played sloppy in the first half and had a couple of turnovers, and we just told them to execute the way they know how in the second half,” said Shilot. “The kids just realized that if we take care of the ball, and do the things we need to do, we could come out with a win.”

A 30-yard Weaver field goal at the 10:00 mark of the third quarter gave the Big Blacks a 19-12 lead.

South Point responded by going 69 yards in 12 plays with Seagraves finding Chase Woodson on a 20-yard touchdown pass on third and nine. Seagraves ran for the conversion and the Pointers led 20-19.

The Pointers converted a fourth and one, and two third downs on the drive. Seagraves finished the game with 137 yards on 18 carries with a touchdown. He also was 1-1 passing for 20 yards with a score.

Point Pleasant drove to the Pointers’ 6-yard line to start the fourth quarter, but Wasonga fumbled and South Point recovered in the end zone.

The Pointers added to their lead with a drive capped by Dillon’s 24-yard run. Seagraves conversion run made it 28-19 with 7:33 to go.

On third down of Point Pleasant’s next drive, Lloyd’s pass was tipped at the line by Seagraves and Casey West pulled the ball down for the interception. Two plays later Dillon scored from 29 yards out and it was 34-19 with 5:49 remaining.

Point Pleasant came right back as Wasonga raced 23 yards for the score and it was 34-26 with 2:06 left.

Point Pleasant went for the onside kick, but it went out of bounds giving the Pointers the ball at their own 48-yard line. The Big Blacks defense would force a fourth down and inches, but Seagraves was able to gain 5 yards to seal the win.

Dillon led the Pointers with 163 yards on 15 carries with 3 touchdowns, and Ryan Plants added 111 yards on 13 carries.

Wasonga had 173 yards on 17 carries with one touchdown to lead the Big Blacks.
