Ironton golfers get tune-up match

PINE GROVE — Hopefully one good day will bring another.

The Ironton Fighting Tigers put together a strong team effort Monday as they beat the Fairland Dragons in preparation for Tuesday’s Southeastern Ohio Athletic League golf match.

Ironton (49-12) posted a 153 score to Fairland’s 171 total. Ironton’s jayvee team had a 186 score.

The SEOAL match starts at noon Tuesday at Valley View Golf Course in Lancaster.

“We had a really good team score. It was good to see all the guys put up good numbers,” said Ironton coach Jeff Kerns. “We’ll need that kind of team effort for our league match.”

Josh Zornes led Ironton with a 2-over par 37. Nathan Kerns and Andy Holtzapfel each shot a 38 and Mason Weisgarber carded a 40. Josh Cooke had a 42 and Josh Mullins a 43.

“Josh (Zornes) was medalist for the first time in his career, so that was good for his confidence,” said coach Kerns.

Fairland got rounds of 42 from Jared Boster, Justin Earl and Chris Ward. Adam Berry shot a 45, Trevor Franklin 46 and Dalton Froelich 47.

For Ironton’s jayvees, Johnathan Williams shot a 38, Brandon Wallace 46, Andrew Hicks 49, and Michael Carter 55.

Ironton plays two matches last week.

On Tuesday at Grayson, Ky., Elliott County had a 157 to win on its home course. Ironton shot a 167 and West Carter 168.

Was led by Nathan Kerns with a 3-over par 39. Mullins and Zornes each shot a 41, Weisgarber 46 and Cooke 47.

“Elliott has a very good team and they played well. We had a good score. That’s a tough course,” said coach Kerns.

Last Wednesday’s match at Riverbend had Grenup County, Ky., winning with a 157 scored. Wheelersburg shot a 172, Ironton 173, Greenup County No. 2 had a 179, Ironton’s jayvees 198, and the Greenup County jayvees 217.
