Early turnovers too much for Redmen

The tone of the game was set on the first play.

Wheelersburg intercepted a pass on the first play of Friday’s game against Rock Hill and converted the turnover into a touchdown.

Things didn’t change as the Redmen turned the ball over three times in five plays anda total of five times in the first half as they lost to the Pirates 52-7 Friday.

“You can’t turn the ball over five times in the first half on the road, especially against a good team,” said Rock Hill coach Todd Knipp. “And give them credit. They capitalized on our mistakes.”

Wheelersburg (5-0) rushed for 365 yards and threw for another 165 for 510 total yards.

Rock Hill (0-5) ran for 112 yards and threw for 20 more.

“There were things we did well. Our pass protection was pretty good. We just didn’t execute,” said Knipp.

Brandon Hall intercepted the first-play pass at the Rock Hill 25 and the Pirates scored four plays later on a 1200yard run by Brandon Schankweiler.

Two fumbles in four plays led to a 1-yard Bryan White scoring run and a 30-yard keeper by Schankweiler.

Scott Walker caught a 71-yard touchdown pass and Schankweiler had another 12-yard TD run as the Pirates took a 35-0 lead at the end of the quarter.

Jordan Schankweiler had a 3-yard run late in the half and Aaron White added a 28-yard field goal and it was 45-0 at the break.

Rock Hill go its only score n a 6-yard run by Trey Wilds with three minutes left in the game.
