It’s our ball and you can’t have it.

The Symmes Valley Vikings controlled the football for 31:10 of the 48-minute game as they beat the Northwest Mohawks 28-6 Friday.

“That was exactly what we wanted to do,” said Vikings coach Rusty Webb of the Vikings offense.

The Vikings (3-2) racked up 353 yards rushing for the game and 369 total yards. Quarterback Kyle Bowen ran 18 times for 163 yards and scored three touchdowns. Tyler Easthom had 71 yards and Evan Herrell 64.

Webb praised the play off the offensive line of ends Gage Patterson, Justin Payne, Ethan Wilson and Wayne Meade, tackles Billy Bloomfield and Jordan Wells, guards Steven Lunsford and Grant Foster, and center Cory Hakes.

“When you run for over 350 yards you’re definitely getting a push up front. Those guys did a great job,” said Webb.

Defensively, the Vikings held Northwest (1-4) to just 123 yards, all on the ground.

“Tyler Eastom and Kyle Bowen had outstanding games, and Jesse Graybeal did a superb job blocking. Cody Bland and Cody Myers had outstanding games on defense,” said Webb. “Our defensive line did a good job of controlling the line of scrimmage.”

Myers had two interceptions, nearly picked off a third, and had a fourth nullified by a penalty.

The Vikings took the opening kickoff and drove 80 yards in seven plays capped by Bowen’s 1-yard run.

Northwest got within 7-6 on a 12-yard run by Luke Brown just before the quarter ended, but the Vikings came right back with a 70-yard, 12-play march. Bowen did the honors again with a 3-yard run and it was 14-6.

The Vikings began a 47-yard drive in the third quarter that spilled over into the fourth stanza only to stall at the Mohawks’ 10. However, Northwest fumbled and the Vikings recovered at the 12.

Four plays later Bowen scored from six yards out and it was 21-6.

After the ensuing kickoff, Easthom picked off a screen pass on third down and returned it 16 yards for a touchdown.
