The St. Joseph Female Flyers may not know who the late, great reliever Tug McGraw was, but it looks like they believe in his motto, “Ya gotta believe.”

The Female Flyers refused to lose Monday as they beat the Sciotoville East Lady Titans in a volleyball match, 25-22, 25-19, 22-25, and 25-13.

“We’ve won some games and the girls are gaining confidence,” said St. Joseph coach Dan Harmon. “They believe in themselves and it shows in their effort.”

The Female Flyers had plenty of contributors.

Sarah Rucker had 13 points and Katie Hacker 12 for the Flyers. Ashley Gannon was credited with 33 assists and Burcham 20.

Michelle Staton had 26 kills, Hacker 24, and Ivana Sethnicka 11.

“You can tell by the numbers that all those girls played well, but we had a lot of other girls who stepped up and made some big plays,” said Harmon.

“Kacie Rucker, Sara Basedow, Kayla Pyles and Hannah Glockner all had some big points or big serves, Lindsey Bryant hasn’t missed a serve in 10 games, and Cat Reeden had a lot of digs to keep balls alive.”

In the reserve match, St. Joseph won 18-25, 25-15, and 25-14.

Sarah Neal and Becka Patrick score nine points each and Caitlin Fout had six. Sarah Goebel and Victoria Redden had eight assists each, Torrie Mollett and Sydney Hammond five kills apiece, and Chelsea Blackburn and Emily Kline both had three digs.
