CHESHIRE — The South Point Pointers used another strong game on the ground en route to a 42-6 win over the River Valley Raiders.
The Pointers rushed for 326 yards on 33 attempts from nine different carriers and forced six River Valley turnovers — four interceptions and two fumbles — in the game.
“It all about momentum, and we you are able to create turnovers; you need to capitalize on them,” South Point Coach Doug Shilot said.
“Our defense played well at times, and River Valley gives you multiple sets on offense and their coaches do a good job with their game plan.”
South Point (3-3, 1-0) had a 22-0 lead at the half, and only ran three offensive plays in the third quarter, but two of the three plays resulted in touchdowns.
After the third interception by River Valley (2-4, 0-1), it was a Chase-to-Chase connection as Chase Kratzenberg found Chase Woodson behind the defense for a 52-yard score. The extra point was good, and the Pointers lead was 29-0 with 7:11 to go in the third.
The Pointers were able to intercept Raiders quarterback Clayton Curnutte for the fourth time in the game when Jacob Seagraves stepped in front of the pass and returned it 37 yards.
Two plays later, Kratzenberg weaved his way through the defense for a 24-yard score. The Drew Lynd kick was good, and South Point led 36-0 after three quarters.
River Valley got its only score of the night when Curnutte found Kody Johnson for a 15-yard touchdown. The extra point was no good, and the score was 36-6 with 9:47 to go in the game.
South Point looked to add to the lead when Tevin Mitchell raced down the sideline for a 51-yard gain. However, four plays later, South Point fumbled inside the River Valley 5-yard line.
After a Raiders’ fumble on the ensuing possession, the Pointers took over at the River Valley 34-yard line. Six plays later, Michael Brown found the end zone from 10 yards out. The extra point was blocked and the final score was set at 42-6.
“South Point has a team with great team speed and it took a while for us to adjust up to their speed,” River Valley coach Jared McClelland said. “(South Point) did a great job covering us, and the turnovers were the key to the game tonight.”
After both teams traded turnovers to start the game, South Point got on the board first when Seagraves ran in from 24 yards out. Kratzenberg ran in the two-point conversion after a bad snap on the extra point attempt, and the score was 8-0 with 5:39 to go in the first quarter.
South Point got its second interception of the quarter, and on the first play of the drive; Woodson ran around the left end, and was able to tiptoe along the sideline for a 37-yard score. Lynd kicked the extra point, and the score was 15-0 with 3:52 to go.
South Point forced a River Valley punt, and took over at their own 17-yard line. The drive spilled over into the second quarter, and five plays later; Seagraves got his second touchdown of the night when he found an opening and raced 60 yards to the end zone. The extra point was good and the halftime lead was 22-0.
The drive covered 83 yards in 8 plays.
Seagraves led the Pointers with 95 yards on just four carries with two touchdowns.
Woodson added 53 yards on four carries with a score, and the 52-yard touchdown catch. Kratzenberg completed 2-of-5 passes for 70 yards with a touchdown.
River Valley was led by Zachary Baird who had 64 yards on 16 attempts. Curnutte was also 12-25 passing for 112 yards.
