Panthers outlast Rock Hill

The Chesapeake Panthers’ backfield was in motion. And it stayed that way.

The Panthers collection of running backs accounted for almost 300 yards rushing in a 36-28 Ohio Valley Conference win over the Rock Hill Redmen Friday.

Chesapeake (3-4, 1-1) was led by quarterback Aaron Donahoe who returned to the lineup and ran for 71 yards and threw for 100 yards. Alex Wells rushed for 98 yards and two touchdowns, Peter Hintz five times 53, and Tyler Edwards added 27 yards on six attempts.

“This was one of our overall better efforts out of our backfield. Wells played well, and Blake and Edwards aren’t very big and they were dragging people and making first downs. Aaron can make some plays. He threw the ball well.”

The game featured 700 yards of total offense. Chesapeake had 371 yards and Rock Hill rolled up 329.

“We should have had more. We stopped ourselves a lot, but we have a tendency to do that,” said Davis.

Corey Bamer ran for 124 yards and quarterback Will McCollister threw for 186 yards for the Redmen (0-7, 0-2).

“Our offense is starting excenuate it strengths. We got our running game going. Our offensive line did a good job (Friday) night,” said Redmen coach Todd Knipp.

“We did well at times defensively. We’re getting better.”

Mitchell Davenport had 10 catches for 147 yards and two TDs.

“McCollister did a nice job. They were on target and they caught everything. Our coverage wasn’t bad. They threw a lot of short routes,” said Davis.

Rock Hill took a 7-0 lead on a 7-yard run by Bamer. The score was set up when a low snap on a punt caused the Chesapeake punter to catch the ball on his knee and give the Redmen good field position.

“We had our usual bad start,” said Davis. “But I was proud of them. We gave them a touchdown right off the bat and we had a lot of things go against us, but we fought back. And they fought back, too.”

Wells scored on a 10-yard run but the conversion failed and Rock Hill led 7-6.

A one-yard run by Steve Lewis extended the Redmen lead to 14-6 at the half.

But Chesapeake scored twice in the third quarter to take the lead for good.

Edwards ran 14 yards for a touchdown and Donahoe’s conversion run tied the game with 3:47 left in the third quarter.

A good punt return and two pass completions set up a 3-yard touchdown run by Wells. Trent Saunders caught the extra point pass and the lead was 22-14.

Chesapeake’s special teams came up with a big play to start the fourth quarter.

Gabriel Freyre blocked a punt and Zach Harris picked up the loose ball and ran 10 yards for the touchdown. Kyle Webb caught the conversion pass and it was 30-14.

Rock Hill came back to score on an 11-yard pass from McCollister to Davenport. Coty Davis caught the extra point pass and it was 30-22.

But Peter Hintz shook free on a 44-yard scoring run a few plays later and the Panthers opened up a 36-22 lead.

The Redmen responded with a scoring drive that ended with another TD pass as Davenport hauled in a 24-yard toss.

Chesapeake erased any comeback hopes by the Redmen when Donahoe ran 59 yards to the 4-yard line and the Panthers took a knee to end the game.
