St. Joseph shoots by Northwest
The percentages were on the side of the St. Joseph Flyers.
Taking 35 shots compared to just 12 for Northwest, the Flyers beat the Mohawks 4-3 Monday in a regular season soccer game.
Northwest had to make their shots count because Flyers’ goal keeper Joe “The Shoe’ Unger had eight saves. The Mohawks were forced to make 22 saves.
“We had many opportunities with shots. Our midfielders played hard,” said Flyers’ assistant coach Sissy Clyse, filling in for head coach Dan Blair who is suffering the effects of a broken leg.
Payton Blair enjoyed another big game offensively for the Flyers with three of their goals plus an assist. Caleb Blackburn had a goal while Levi Hopkins and George McCown also had saves.
Just seven minutes into the game Blackburn scored with a headed shot off a great corner kick by Hopkins.
The Mohawks had a hand ball in box resulting in a penalty kick for the Flyers and Blair deflected the shot off the goalie for the second goal and a 2-0 lead just seven minutes later.
Northwest made it 2-1 when Kyle Trapp scored on a through ball with eight minutes left in the half.
Chaise Hall scored on a through ball at the 17-minute mark to tie the game, but seven minutes later Blair crossed the ball over to Simpson who scored to put the Flyers back on top.
The Mohawks tied the game with 8:40 to play when Trapp sent a through ball to Hall, but that lead lasted all of just 40 seconds as McCown headed a ball to Blair who scored and the Flyers were on top for good at 4-3.
St. Joseph visits Portsmouth West Wednesday in a makeup game and hosts Greenup County, Ky., at 5:30 p.m. Thursday on Senior Night.
The Flyers begin sectional play next Monday at 5 p.m. against Portsmouth Clay as they play their first-ever home tournament game.
