Junior Hornets clinch share of MSOVC

CHESAPEAKE - Two for the price of one.

The Coal Grove Junior Hornets 20-0 win over the ChesapeakeJunior Panthers Sept. 29 not only clinched a share of the Middle School Ohio Valley Conference title, but recaptured the Little Brown Jug the two teams play for each season.

Wayne Sparks ran 10 yards for a touchdown on a bootleg. Frank Delawder added the two-point conversion and it was 8-0.

The three-time defending champion Panthers drove to the 3-yard line before stalling just before the end of the half.

Coal Grove scored on the first play of the second half on a 65-yard run by Aaron Dickess and it was 14-0.

Chesapeake had another drive fizzle at the 2-yard line as the Panthers were stopped on downs.

The Hornets added an insurance score on a 9-yard run by Frank Delawder to cap an 80-yard drive.

Dion Cunningham's interception of a Panther pass sealed the final score.

The Coal Grove defense allowed 145 yards rushing and 19 passing. Delawder, Mark Davidson, Daniel Haynes, James Wood and Dickess each had five tackles.

Dickess led the offense with 12 carries for 131 yards and a score.

The Hornet ground attack rushed for a total of 298 yards.

The loss for the Panthers (3-2, 1-1) was their first in league play since the Hornets defeated them in 2001.

The Hornets are 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the OVC.
