Oaks take advantage of Vikings’ poor tackling to get win

The two keys in football are blocking and tackling. The Symmes Valley Vikings handled the blocking part, but as for the tackling …

The Vikings didn’t make the necessary tackles and as a result the Oak Hill Oaks ran away with a 56-7 Southern Ohio Conference win Friday night.

“We have some guys in some new spots, but that’s not an excuse. We didn’t play well and we didn’t tackle well. Against good football teams, you have to play well,” said Vikings coach Rusty Webb.

Symmes Valley (4-4, 1-2) ran for 153 yards on 57 carries and had 209 total yards, but the Oaks finished with 326yards rushing and 127 more passing.

“We didn’t execute on offense and we didn’t tackle on defense,” said Webb.

Justin Fisher, who ran 23 times for 247 yards, scored twice to start the game as he rambled 31 and 49 yards.

Ethan Lewis returned an interception 41 yards for a touchdown and Jesse Slone hit Joey Maynard with a 28-yard pass as the Oaks built a 28-0 first quarter lead.

Weston Hale ran 8 yards for a touchdown as the Oaks went up 35-0 with 6:11 left in the first half.

The Vikings got on the scoreboard as time expired in the second quarter when Cody Myers hit Tyler Eathom with a 32-yard pass.

Hale had a 21-yard scoring run with 7:37 left in the third quarter. The score was set up by a 15-yard pass to Maynard.

Slone and Maynard also hooked up for the conversion and it was 43-7.

The Oaks (5-3, 2-1) tried to add to their total later in the quarter, but the Vikings’ defense force two incomplete passes and snuffed out a reverse to force a punt.

However, the Oaks got the ball back and Fisher scored with 1:54 let in the quarter on a 9-yard run.

The Oaks’ first team was able to put a final score on the board after the Vikings turned the ball over on downs. Fisher bolted 60 yards for the touchdown with 10:18 to play and it was 56-7.
