Coal Grove clinches share of OVC championship with easy win

The offense worked overtime to make sure there was no overtime.

Last year, Coal Grove needed two overtimes to beat the River Valley Raiders and gain a share of the Ohio Valley Conference championship.

The Hornets left no doubt about the outcome this year with 583 total yards as they routed the Raider 61-6 Friday.

With the win, Coal Grove clinched at least a share of the league title. The Hornets, 6-3 and 4-0 in the OVC, can win the title outright with a win at Fairland next Friday. A loss could create a three-way tie with Fairland and South Point.

Oakie Haynes had his biggest rushing game of the season with 157 yards on only seven carries for the Hornets. Chris Brammer added 70 yards on six attempts.

The Hornets used 10 different ballcarriers.

Haynes and Brammer used long runs to give the Hornets a quick 15-0 lead. Haynes ran 46 yards to score just 44 seconds into the game and Brammer added the conversion run.

Brammer then bolted 48 yards for a touchdown and Scott Erwin kicked the extra point with 8:56 left in the quarter.

River Valley (2-7, 0-4) answered with its only touochdown of the game when quarterback Clayton Curnutte scored from one-yard out and it was 15-6with 5:27 on the clock.

But Coal Grove came right back with a scoring drive capped by Frank Delawder’s 7-yard run and Erwin’s kick pushed the lead to 22-6.

Bubba Wood, Coal Grove’s other fullback, extended the lead to 28-6 with a 20-yard burst midway through the second quarter.

Haynes then capped the first half scoring with a 65-yard jaunt with just 1:20 left in the half. Erwin’s conversion kick made it 35-6.

Nose guard Rob Barnette got a chance to carry the ball in the second half and made good of his only attempt as he scored on a 3-yard run at the 10:23 mark of the third quarter as the led grew to 41-6.

The reserve backfield took over in the fourth quarter as Dion Cunningham scored on an 8-yard run, Boo Wood rambled 443 yards for a touchdown, and Mike Nance bolted 57 yards into the end zone.

Damon Caruso kicked a pair of extra points.

Defensively, the Hornets held River Valley to only 150 total yards including 82 yards passing. Curnutte was limited to 6-of-14 passing for 78 yards.
