County vote totals official

No big changes — and certainly no upsets — resulted from Monday’s official canvas of Lawrence County’s general election.

While all local candidates picked up a few more votes because of the tally of provisional ballots, the outcomes of races stayed the same.

In the presidential race, President-elect Barack Obama collected an additional 306 votes in Lawrence County, making his total 11,262. Republican John McCain picked up 360 more votes, bringing his Lawrence County total to 15,415.

The coroner’s race was one of the closest races on election night, with Democrat Portia Canos taking an early lead that slipped away from her as the evening progressed. In the end, she lost to Republican Kurt Hofmann by only 381 votes. Now, with the canvas conducted, the vote spread in the coroner’s race was lessened to 354 votes. Canos collected 281 more votes in the canvas, bringing her total to 12,674, However, Hofmann got an additional 254 votes, bringing his total to 13,038.

In the two Lawrence County Commission races, incumbent Republican Jason Stephens picked up 295 additional votes to bring his final tally to 14,316. His Democratic challenger, Wayne Pennington, collected an additional 253 votes, bringing his total to 12,026. Democratic incumbent Tanner Heaberlin picked up 249 more votes, bringing his total to 12,086; Republican Les Boggs collected an extra 310 votes, bringing his total to 14,372.

In the county clerk’s race, Republican Cheyrl Jenkins picked up an additional 226 votes, making her final vote total 11,764. Democrat Mike Patterson collected an additional 326 votes, making his total 14,791.

In the sheriff’s race, Independent candidate Russell Bennett Jr., got 216 more votes, bringing his final tally to 8,672. GOP opponent Jeff Lawless got an additional 330 votes from the inclusion of provisional ballots. Those extra votes increased his total to 17,637.

In the recorder’s race, Independent candidate Jonathan Ater got 51 more votes, bringing his total to 1,751; Democrat Susan Sheridan 254 more votes, making her final tally 11,304 while incumbent Republican Sharon Gossett Hager picked up an additional 249 votes, making her total 13,283.

In the treasurer’s race, incumbent Democrat Stephen Dale Burcham collected an additional 357 votes, bringing his total to 16,617 while Republican challenger Perry Brock got an extra 198 votes, bringing his total to 10,126.

The South Point operating levy passed on election night by a 992-708 margin. The canvas brought those totals to 1,013 in favor of and 721 against. In the case of the Coal Grove operating levy, which did not get voter approval, the election night tally was 519 against and 442 in favor of it. With the official canvas completed, the final results were 527 against and 453 in favor of it.

In the Fayette Township fire levy, the official count was 1,511 in favor of and 1,003 against. On election night those figures were 1,469 in favor of and 982 against it.

The final vote count for the Perry Township fire levy was 1,059 in favor of and 1,032 against it. On election night those totals were 1,031 in favor of and 1,012 against it.

In the Rome Township fire levy, the final count was 2,045 in favor of and 1,927 against it;. On election night, the count was 2,021 in favor of and 1,908 against it.

In the Elizabeth Township fire levy, the final count was 702 in favor of and 511 against it. On election night those figures were 688 yes votes and 501 no votes.

In the Fairland stadium levy, the final count was 3,305 against it and 1,515 in favor of it. On election night, the number voting against the levy was 3,212 while 1,463 cast a ballot in support of it.

With the final tally conducted, there were also no changes in any of the alcohol options. All of them failed.
