Mr. David Harwood “Boompa” Hogsten, Jr. 81, of Franklin Furnace, passed away on Monday, Nov. 24, 2008, at Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital in Russell, Ky.
He was born Sept. 22, 1927 in Ironton, the son of the late David Harwood Hogsten, Sr. and Mary Algeo Hogsten Riley. He was a retired foreman from Armco Steel Corporation and was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving in WW II. He greatly enjoyed fishing, hunting, and riding his great grandchildren along the riverbank on his tractor. He had an enormous collection of Indian artifacts that he collected from the fields in southern Ohio. He was proud to have his home of many years as the headquarters for the Ironton High School class of 1945 reunions.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Joanna Bazell Hogsten on April 2, 2008. He was also preceded in death by his son-in-law, Michael A. Holtzapfel I.
He is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Cathie and Kenneth Unrue and Connie Holtzapfel, all of Franklin Furnace; five grandchildren, Michael A. “Chip” Holtzapfel II of Franklin Furnace, Greta (Chris) White of Wheelersburg, Anna (Peter) Frahm of Crystal Lake, Ill., Amy Walter of Crystal Lake, Ill., Clinton David Roy Unrue of Schaumburg, Ill.; 10 great grandchildren, Michael A Holtzapfel III, Keely Denise Holtzapfel, Raygan Renee’ Reyes, Domnic Gabriel Reyes, Christian Bryan Michael White, Aiden Kenneth Frahm, Noah David Frahm, Madison Joanna Frahm, Jacob Daniel Walter, and Ava Lynn Walter.
Graveside funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Woodland Cemetery, Section 7, with Pastor Vicki Bays officiating. There will be no visitation. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to one’s favorite charity. Arrangements under the direction of Tracy Brammer Funeral Home.
