Gallipolis gets past Lady Panthers

Looks can be deceiving.

The Chesapeake Lady Panthers got the shots they wanted, they just wouldn’t fall in a 45-37 loss Thursday to the Gallipolis Blue Angels.

“Our post defense was good and we had good looks at the basket, but we couldn’t knock them down. We struggled around the rim finishing,” said Chesapeake coach Sammy Gue.

The Lady Panthers held Rachel Jones and Allie Troester to a combined 14 points, but Shantelle Rathburn scored 12 points and Amy Noe eight as Gallipolis improved to 3-0.

“If you had told me Jones and Troester would have 14 between them, I would have thought we should be fine,” said Gue. “But our intensity level at the start of the game was low.”

Chesapeake was also hurt at the foul line where the Blue Angels converted 12-of-19 attempts and the Lady Panthers just 4-of-6.

“The free throw difference was a big, big negative for us. Any time someone shoot 19 free throws and you shoot six, it’s going to be a problem,” said Gue.

Kimmie Bennett scored 16 points and Sarah Mayo 13 to pace Chesapeake (1-1).
