Lady Panthers run past Trojans

Don’t take it personal. The Chesapeake Lady Panthers just like to play physical.

Using their muscle, the Lady Panthers jumped out to an early big lead and rolled past the Portsmouth Lady Trojans 61-39 Monday.

“We played hard and we played physical. We were looking to get the ball up and down the floor, but we had several unforced turnovers. We just didn’t take care of the ball,” said Lady Panthers coach Sammy Gue.

Chesapeake bolted to a 19-5 first quarter lead and they were never headed.

Both teams scored 15 points in the second quarter and it was 34-20 at the half, but the Lady Panthers came back to outscored the Lady Trojans 14-7 in the third quarter to build a 48-27 cushion.

Sarah Mayo scored 15 points — she was 8-of-10 from the foul line — to lead Chesaepake. Kimmie Bennett scored 13 points and Courtney Heffner had 11.

Portsmouth (0-3) had three players in double figures as Lataysha McGinnis and, Ashleigh Link scored 11 each, and Ri-chiel McGraw 10.

Despite the big win, Gue said the Lady Panthers still have plenty of work ahead of them.

“The effort was there, but defensively we’re still not in a defensive position at all times. We’re not doing a good job of keeping teams out of the lane. We have to fix it,” said Gue.

Chesapeake (2-1) opens Ohio Valley Conference Thursday at home against Rock Hill.
