It was the first win for the Chesapeake Panthers, but it was a milestone win for coach Ryan Davis.

The Panthers beat the Gallipolis Blue Devils 50-33 Tuesday to open the season and it was career win No. 100 for Davis.

“I had forgot about it. I remember looking at some stuff (about his record) this past summer, and I didn’t remember until just now,” said Davis who is in his eighth season as a head coach.

But the milestone win wasn’t the biggest concern for Davis. It was beating Gallipolis.

The Panthers got the win behind the shooting Nathan Copley and a defense that produced 15 steals.

Copley hit four 3-pointers and scored 24 points. He also had three steals and eight rebounds.

Chesapeake was hampered by a 15-for-45 shooting performance.

“We played well defensively except for a stretch in the third quarter. We rebounded pretty decent,” said Davis. “We didn’t shoot it well, but our effort was fine.”

Kyle Mitchell had nine points for Gallipolis (0-1).

Chesapeake plays North Adams at 5:45 p.m. Saturday in the Ohio University Classic.
