St. Joseph gets past Rock Hill in overtime, 60-57

If Tuesday’s game were a question and answer session, the Rock Hill Redmen would have had more questions than answers.

The Redmen needed an answer for St. Joseph senior guard Chad Harvey, but it was nowhere to be found as the Flyers escaped with a 60-57 overtime win Tuesday.

Harvey scored six of his game-high 26 points in overtime to erase a four-point deficit and put the Flyers ahead for good.

“We had our chances but we couldn’t put them away. We had no answer for Harvey and they made plays when they had to,” said Redmen coach Adam Simpson who coached Harvey as a freshman and sophomore.

“I don’t feel we lost, I think they just won. It was a typical Rock Hill and St. Joe game.”

St. Joseph (2-0) was down as many as eight points in the fourth quarter only to come back and tie the game behind baskets by Caleb Blackburn and Joey Basedow.

Rock Hill led 47-46 with two seconds to play in regulation, but Blackburn stole the inbounds pass, was fouled and converted one of the free throws to tie the game and force the overtime.

“We hung around and hung around and forced some turnovers. It was good to see our guys not quit. We showed signs of maturity, especially when we got down six right off the bat in overtime,” said Flyers’ coach Kevin Sheridan.

Rock Hill took a 57-53 lead to start the overtime when the defense forced three turnovers and Harvey scored six straight points to put St. Joseph up 59-57.

George McCown’s foul shot set the final score.

“Our depth was the key. We got some solid minutes from our bench again. George McCown had some nice passes,” said Sheridan. “We got good production from Caleb (Blackburn) and Joey (Basedow) that helped us offensively.”

Blackburn finished with 11 points, five steals and five rebounds while Basedow had 10 points. Harvey had six rebounds and Payton Blair came up with four steals and five assists.

Rock Hill had three players in double figures in its opening game. Sam Cooke scored 14 points, Brian Klaiber 12, and Dustin Chandler 10.
