Tight ‘D’ key to win for Chesy girls

Good defense is what Chesapeake coach Sammy Gue likes. On Thursday against the Rock Hill Redwomen, Gue was very happy.
The Lady Panthers tight defense helped produce a 48-20 Ohio Valley Conference win over the Redwomen.
“Our defensive intensity early was great. We had good pressure on the ball,” said Gue. “Rock Hill is just so young and doesn’t have hardly any experience, but they’ll be fine down the road.”
Amanda Ruffner scored six points in the first quarter as Chesapeake took a 13-0 lead. Sarah Mayo got eight points in the second quarter and it was 29-2 at the break.
Mayo score eight points in the first minute and a half of the third quarter and then sat out the rest of the game.
Chesapeake took a 42-9 lead after three quarters.
Mayo finished with 19 points and Rufner 13 to lead the Lady Panthers (3-1, 1-0). Chelsea Harper scored 14 to lead Rock Hill.
“Mayo really had her confidence going against their zone and Ruffner stepped up. We really needed that tonight,” said Gue.
