When Plan “A” fails, go to Plan “B.”

The Coal Grove Lady Hornets did.

The Chesapeake Lady Panthers plan was to take Coal Grove leading scorer Jordyn Cox out of the game. While Cox’s scoring was slowed down, her court presence wasn’t as the Lady Hornets posted a key 50-35 Ohio Valley Conference win Thursday.

“We executed our offense, we just didn’t make the shots,” said Lady Hornets coach Nick Miller.

“They were doing a good job on Jordyn, so I told her to look for the open man and she understood the situation and got the ball in the right hands. Taylor (Sexton) and Danielle (Carpenter) stepped up and did a nice job.”

Sexton led Coal Grove (5-1, 2-0) with 13 points and nine rebounds. Carpenter had 11 points and 11 rebounds. Chelsea Delong had 12 points and eight rebounds while Cox added 10 points.

Chesapeake (5-2, 1-1) was led by Sarah Mayo with a game-high 17 points including four 3-point goals. Amanda Ruffner added 10 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.

“We didn’t handle the situation very well,” said Lady Panthers coach Sammy Gue. “We rushed our shots and we threw the ball over the place. But give Coal Grove credit. They did what they needed to do to win.”

Neither team shot well the first half. Coal Grove was just 8 of 28 and Chesapeake 7 of 28 as the Lady Hornets took an 18-15 lead at the break.

Baskets by Sexton, Carpenter and Delong gave Coal Grove a 24-17 lead. A steal and layup by Sexton put the lead at 30-19 with 2:07 left in the quarter.

Mayo kept the Lady Panthers close with a pair of treys in the quarter, the second coming with 34 seconds on the clock that cut the Lady Hornets’ lead to 32-27.

Coal Grove outscored Chesapeake 11-5 to begin the fourth quarter and it was 43-32 with 4:10 to play after Cox converted a three-point play.

A layup by Abby Nance and two foul shots by Cox opened up a 47-32 lead.

“Our senior leadership in the second half was the key,” said Miller.

“When we struggled early, but we hung in there. Chesapeake is a good young team, but we were able to hit some shots and our defense played pretty good.”
