Adam Berry may not be E.F. Hutton, but he knows a good tip when he gets one.

Berry’s tip-in with 4.4 seconds to play lifted the Fairland Dragons to a 66-64 win over the Coal Grove Hornets Friday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

The last-second outcome was the second game in a row for the Dragons who lost at Rock Hill on Wednesday when the Redmen got a basket with two seconds left.

“This time we got the basket. That was a big play by Adam Berry,” said Fairland coach John McClung.

“We shot a little better, but we didn’t guard as well. It’s a conference win on the road and a physical game, so we’ll take it. We didn’t handle the lead like we should. We just have to get some belief back into us.”

Berry finished with 18 points to lead the Dragons (2-3, 1-1). Zach Jordan scored 16, Chad Fisher 12, and Cole Hatfield returned to the lineup with 11 points, four rebounds and four assists.

Evan Salyers had five blocked shots.

‘We’re getting scoring from four or five guys. It was great to have Cole back. He gives us a lot of energy and leadership we didn’t have the other night. If we continue to play team basketball, we’ll be a good team. Individually we’re not very good,” said McClung.

Coal Grove was led by Wayne Sparks with a game-high 24 points. Devin Monnier had 13points and Cody Damron 10 points and five rebounds. Eric Edens had five assists.

Jordan and Berry scored seven each in the first quarter as Fairland took a 23-15 lead. Sparks kept the Hornets close with eight points.

Each team got 15 points in the second quarter with Jordan scoring six for the Dragons. Sparks had six and Monnier five and it was 38-30 at the break.

The Dragons went up 51-41 at the end of the third quarter, but Sparks scored seven points and Edens made six free throws as Coal Grove rallied to tie the game.

Hatfield and Berry netted six points each in the fourth quarter for Fairland.
