Vikings stun Eagles in OT

Shooting 15 of 37 from the foul line usually spells defeat for a basketball team.

Evidently, the Symmes Valley Vikings use a different dictionary.

Despite shooting a dismal 40 percent from the line, the Vikings still found a way to upset the Eastern Eagles 73-69 in overtime Friday in a Southern Ohio Conference game.

“If you look at our foul shooting, we never should have won this. But our kids just battled and refused to lose. Hopefully we took a big step forward,” said Vikings coach Alvin Carpenter.

One big reason the Vikings overcame their poor foul shooting was the scoring of Kris Tibbs who had a career-high 31 points and hauled down 16 rebounds.

Carpenter said Tibbs had a great game, but he had a good supporting cast, too.

“We played really well. Justin Payne did a nice job. We use Payne and (Jesse) Graybeal for their defense and they’ve been playing well,” said Carpenter.

“Hunter Johnson, Josh Craft and Luke Taylor came off the bench and gave us good minutes. They took care of the ball. That’s something we’ve been lacking so far.”

The Vikings led 13-12 after the first quarter, but Jordan Thornsberry had nine points in the second quarter as the Eagles (2-1, 1-1) built a 33-23 halftime lead. Craft scored seven of the Vikings’ 10 points in the quarter.

Tibbs had 12 points in the third quarter as the Vikings got within 53-47.

Symmes Valley (1-2, 1-1) made just 3 of 12 from the foul line in the fourth quarter including six straight at the end of regulation but still managed to send the game into overtime.

“The thing is, we had some pretty good foul shooters at the line,” said Carpenter.

Tibbs scored five points in overtime as the Vikings outscored the Eagles 12-8.

Payne finished with 10 points and five steals. Craft had 10 points and five assists. Brandon Bowling handed out seven assists.
