The dead time didn’t kill the South Point Lady Pointers.

Despite struggling for a brief span, the Lady Pointers remained unbeaten as they won the Spring Valley Invitational with a 47-41 win over the host Lady Timberwolves on Saturday night.

“We played real well for two and a half quarters, then we let up. The end of the third quarter and beginning of the fourth quarter we relaxed, but then we collected ourselves and pulled away,” said South Point coach Dave Adams.

The key for the Lady Pointers wasn’t offense as much as defense. Tinesha Taylor and Ericka Leighty gave South Point a much-needed defensive effort.

“(Kelsea) Plybon is a big, strong girl. She’s pretty tough, but Tinesha played her well. Leighty did a nice job on (Sarah) Adkins. She really didn’t score until Leighty fouled out,” said Adams.

Jalynn Bradburn scored six points and Kayla Fletcher five points— each hit a 3-pointer — as South Point jumped out to a 15-6 lead.

Taylor scored eight in the second quarter as South Point built a 28-14 halftime lead.

The lead jumped to 17 to begin the third quarter at 33-16, but Plybon scored eight points to trigger a 14-6 run to end the quarter and cut the Lady Pointers lead to 39-30.

In the fourth quarter Spring Valley got as close as four points, but the Lady Pointers were 4 of 6 from the line, Bradburn had a key put-back to extend the lead to six and Fletcher made a 3-pointer and some clutch free throws in down the stretch.

Fletcher had 15 points for the Lady Pointers. Taylor finished with 13 points and 12 rebounds while Bradburn had 13 points and five steals.

Allison Mitchell pulled down 13 rebounds to lead as South Point outrebounded Spring Valley 36-27.

Plybon led the T-Wolves with 14 points.
