Ironton police are continuing the investigation into a dog attack over the weekend that injured a one-and-a-half year old girl.

Ironton police were called to a residence in the 2700 block of South Fifth Street just after 7 p.m. Friday night, Ironton Police Capt. Dan Johnson said.

The father of the child advised police the family dog, a pit bull mix, had attacked the child and that he had shot the dog.

“He should not have done that,” Ironton Dog Warden George Wilson said. “We needed the dog so that we could have quarantined it.”

Wilson said he is investigating whether the dog has ever had a rabies vaccination.

Wilson said a family member told him the dog had never had a rabies shot. The dog was at least two years old.

The child was taken to Cabell-Huntington Hospital in Huntington, W.Va.

Information on her condition was not available as of press time.
