Has anyone heard of the 1971 movie “The Gang That Couldn’t Shoot Straight?”

Well, the Ironton Fighting Tigers produced a sequel Tuesday night only this one was no comedy.

Despite getting one good shot after another, the Fighting Tigers suffered their worse shooting performance of the season in a 58-53 overtime loss to the Wheelersburg Pirates.

“We couldn’t buy a basket, and we got frustrated and let it affect the rest of our game,” said Ironton coach Mark LaFon.

“Wheelersburg did a good job of playing team ball and keeping the pace of the game where they wanted, but we helped that because we couldn’t make a shot and then we had a lot of unforced turnovers.”

Ironton shot just 38 percent from the field for the game including a horrendous 2-of-13 effort in the first quarter as Wheelersburg took an 11-4 lead.

The Pirates had their own troubles as they made only one field goal in the second quarter and scored a mere three points.

Tommy Waginger came off the bench for Ironton to score five points including a 3-pointer to tie the game and Jonathon Schweickart hit a put-back shot with 20 seconds on the clock as the Fighting Tigers took a 15-13 halftime lead.

A layup by Lukas Morris midway through the third quarter gave Ironton its biggest lead of the game at 25-17.

The Pirates tied the game thanks to a three-point play by Andy Stegman and a 3-point goal by Tyler Craigmiles, but a layup by Morris put Ironton up 30-28 at the end of the quarter.

Wheelersburg (5-1) went up 46-44 on a layup by Brandon Schankweiler only to have Ironton’s Dustin Green tie the game with a 15-footer with 47 seconds left in regulation.

Tim Kochendoerfer drew a charge as Ironton got the ball back and Green was fouled driving to the basket to attempt a pair of foul shots with two seconds left.

But Green — Ironton’s leading scorer on the season — missed both attempts and the game went into overtime.

Green, who did not score until the fourth quarter, had a layup and 17-footer to leave the game tied at 50 with 2:27 on the clock.

Craigmiles hit his fifth 3-pointer of the game to put the Pirates up for good at 53-50.

Ironton (5-2) got within 54-52 on two foul shots by Green, but the Pirates were able to hold on for the win despite shooting 7-of-16 from the line in overtime and just 10-of-25 for the game.

Green had 14 points and Schweickart 10 points and 14 rebounds.

Stegman had 23 points and 10 rebounds for the Pirates while Craigmiles scored 17.

Ironton starting center Michael Lamb did not play due to an ankle injury.
