Symmes Valley 5th-grader wins county spelling bee

The 2008 Lawrence County Spelling Bee was held in the Ironton Municipal Court Wednesday, Dec. 10.

Felicity Jenkins, a fifth-grade student from Symmes Valley Elementary, was the champion.

Second place finisher, was eighth grader Julia Wu from Fairland Middle School.

Jenkins will advance to Columbus on March 7, 2009, for a state competition.

She is the daughter of Scott and Rhonda Jenkins of Kitts Hill. Felicity also was the winner last year.

Julia is the daughter of Jingping Zhang and Guoliang Wu of Proctorville. Julia also placed second in last year’s spelling bee in a heated competition with Felicity.

Participating students were: Sarah Nickel and Alex Carey from Dawson-Bryant; Julia Wu and Christopher “Ty” Staten from Fairland; Logan Gleichauf, Tyler Bowles (ill for the competition) and Alex Owens (alternate) from Ironton City Schools; Kobe McWhorter and Drew Crum from Chesapeake; Lori Conley and Austin Wood from South Point; Katelyn Ferguson and Felicity Jenkins from Symmes Valley; Hannah Miller and Gavin Byerley from Ironton Catholic and Tommi Butler and Mackenzie Rodehaver from Rock Hill.
