Coal Grove uses strong defense to beat Rock Hill

The Coal Grove Hornets used a strong defensive effort to shut down the Rock Hill offense as they picked up a 51-35 Ohio Valley Conference win Tuesday.

“Our defense was the story of the game. They had a hard time solving out defense,” said Hornets’ coach Randy Ward.

Coal Grove’s defense forced the Redmen into 23 turnovers. The Hornets had just 14.

Devin Monnier had 11 points and seven rebounds to lead the Hornets (5-5, 2-2). Dane Haukedahl added 10 poins and Eric Edens handed out 10 assists.

“Eric Edens only scored two points, but he played one of his best games leading the team,” said Ward.

Brandon Klaiber scored 12 points to pace the Redmen (4-6,1-3) while Luke Simpson scored 11 points including three 3-pointers.

The Hornets’ Wayne Sparks scored all seven of his points in the first quarter and the game was tied at 13-13.

Simpson scored all 11 of his points in the first half and the Redmen trailed just 20-17.

Haukedahl scored six points in the third quarter and the defense held Rock Hill to five points as Coal Grove went up 37-22.

“The third quarter killed us. It was one of those games,” said Rock Hill coach Adam Simpson.

Monnier got six of his points in the fourth quarter as Coal Grove outscored the Redmen 14-13.
