The Portsmouth Notre Dame Titans has to put the Symmes Valley Vikings at the foul line.

The Vikings had to make the foul shots, so Kris Tibbs and Justin Payne did what was needed as they shot Symmes Valley to a 72-69 Southern Ohio Conference win Tuesday.

Tibbs and Payne each converted 8-of-10 from the foul line as the Vikings held off the Titans’ second half rally.

“We started off pretty well the first half, and we didn’t play too bad the second half,” said Vikings’ coach Alvin Carpenter.

“ In the second half their guards started stepping it up and we got in a little foul trouble and they made a run on us. But Justin Payne and Kris Tibbs did a nice job hitting their free throws.”

Tibbs scored 11 points in the first quarter as the Vikings outscored the Titans 22-10.

Symmes Valley (4-5, 3-2) stretched its lead to 36-22 at the half.

The Titans outscored the Vikings 19-12 in the third quarter to get within 48-41 despite eight points by Luke Taylor.

The Vikings were 9-of-11 from the line in the fourth quarter including Payne who was 8-of-10.

Aaron Noel scored 14 of his 18 points in the quarter as he tried to rally the Titans by himself.

Tibbs finished with 28 points, 12 rebounds and four blocked shots. Taylor had 15 points and 10 rebounds, and Payne had 10 points. Hunter Johnson grabbed 12 rebounds.

Kevin Delabar scored 20 to lead the Titans and Tyler Fitch had 12.
