When the St. Joseph Flyers have a rebound game, they have a rebound game.

After losing a heartbreaking 68-63 game on Friday, the Flyers dominated the glass as the bounced back with a 65-53 win over the Portsmouth Notre Dame Titans on Saturday night.

The Flyers had 39 rebounds with Joe “The Shoe” Unger pulling down 13 with eight on the offensive end. Caleb Blackburn, Chad Harvey, T.J. Young and Payton Blair all had five each.

“Tonight was our best night all year rebounding the basketball. Joseph Unger did a real good job. Overall it was a very good effort all the way around,” said Flyers’ coach Kevin Sheridan.

Notre Dame jumped out to an 18-11 lead in the first quarter. Harvey scored five points to keep he Flyers close.

Blair scored 13 points and Harvey nine as the Flyers erupted for 28 points in the second quarter and took a 39-30 halftime lead.

The Titans came back to get within 48-43 at the end of the third quarter.

“In the third quarter we let them get back in the game, but we held them to three field goals and that helped. And we finally hit some free throws,” said Sheridan.

“They’re more of a zone team, and when we got the lead we forced them to play man and we were able to draw some fouls.”

Blair 9-of-9 and Young was 4-of-5 at the line as the Flyers went 22-of-38 for the game. Blair made 4-of-4 free throws down the stretch as the Flyers increased their lead.

Harvey led the Flyers (6-6) with 21 points along with four assists. Blair got 17 points and six assists.

Tyler Noel led the Titans with 12 points and 14 rebounds. Aaron Noel had 13 points and Kevin Delabar 12.
