Last-second shot beats Hornets, 56-55

The River Valley Raiders had just one lead in the game and Cody Smith made just one basket. Both came are the right time.

Smith threw up a 22-foot 3-point goal at the buzzer — his only basket of the game — as the Raiders edged the Coal Grove Hornets 56-55 Friday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

The Hornets (5-6, 2-3) started well by taking a 12-9 lead at the end of the first quarter and the lead was 28-22 at the break.

Coal Grove led by 16 points with 4:30 left in the third quarter before River Valley cut the deficit to 42-34 at the end of the quarter.

River Valley used a 10-3 run to trail 47-46 with 4:24 to play, but the Hornets led 55-51 after Eric Edens made two foul shots with 21 seconds to play.

The Raiders’ Clayton Curnutte scored to make it 55-53 with 11 seconds to go.

After another foul, the Hornets missed two free throws with seven seconds to go and the Raiders’ Cody McAvena got the rebound.

McAvena threw a long pass to Smith who turned and hurriedly heaved up a shot.

Wayne Sparks scored 15 points to lead three Hornets in double figures. Evan Ferguson had 14 points and Cody Damron added 11.

Zak Deel scored 16, Curnutte 13, Kody Johnson 11 and McAvena 10 to lead the Raiders (3-6, 2-3).
