The Coal Grove Hornets sized up the situation, and it fit.

Coal Grove’s inside trio of Dane Haukedahl, Wayne Sparks and Devin Monnier combined for 35 points and the Hornets rallied in the fourth quarter to edge the St. Joseph Flyers 54-48 Tuesday.

Haukedahl had 16 points, Sparks got 10 points and 10 rebounds, and Monnier added nine points as the Hornets improved to 7-6.

“We had an advantage inside so we used our size,” said Hornets coach Randy Ward. “Haukedahl had a big game for us.”

While the Flyers had trouble with the Hornets’ inside game, Coal Grove had trouble with St. Joseph’s Chad Harvey.

The Flyers’ senior guard scored a game-high 29 points including all 17 points for his team in the fourth quarter.

Haukedahl had eight points and Sparks six as Coal Grove took an 18-4 lead to start the game. Caleb Blackburn scored four points to get the Flyers within 18-9 at the end of the quarter.

Harvey had six points in the second quarter and the Flyers limited the Hornets to four points as they came back to tie the game at the half, 22-22.

St. Joseph outscored Coal Grove 9-8 in the third quarter to take a 31-30 lead. Harvey and Monnier scored five points each in the quarter.

“We had a great effort, especially to get down 18-4,” said Flyers’ coach Kevin Sheridan.

“When we had the lead in the third quarter we weren’t able to extend the lead and you have to take advantage of that when you’re on the road.”

While Harvey exploded in the fourth quarter, the Hornets used six points by Eric Edens and 9-of-14 shooting from the foul line to get the win.

“We didn’t execute in the fourth quarter. We played our tails off for 30 minutes, but we had four turnovers in the fourth quarter and three in the final two minutes,” said Sheridan.

Blackburn had eight rebounds for the Flyers and Harvey six.
