The big men played big.

Behind the scoring and rebounding of their three inside players, the Fairland Dragons beat the Huntington St. Joseph Fighting Irish 62-51 Wednesday in the semifinals of the St. Joseph Invitational at Memorial Field House.

Tyler Godby had 18 points and 10 rebounds, Adam Berry got 11 points and 10 rebounds, and Evan Salyers had five rebounds to lead the Dragons.

“Berry played his best game of season. He was being a force inside. He gave us a tremendous effort and Godby gave tremendous energy throughout the game,” said Dragons’ coach John McClung.

Chris Ward aided the Dragons’ effort as he drained three 3-pointers in the first half as they took a 25-16 lead.

“Chris Ward’s nine points in the first half were big and Matt Bloomfield did a great job breaking people down,” said McClung.

Fairland was up 44-31 after three quarters and held a double-digit lead for almost the entire second half with the exception of the final score.

Kwanis Hayes scored 30 points for the Fighting Irish including 22 in the second half.

“We had spurts when we played good defense and pulled away, but then we’d let down and let them back in it. But overall I felt we were in control of the game,” said McClung.

The win puts Fairland (8-4) in the tournament’s championship game against rival Chesapeake at 9 p.m. Friday. McClung said it will take a better effort to beat the Panthers who routed Wayne 61-32 in the other semifinal game.

“(St. Joseph) had some nice athletes, but we had way too many turnovers. We can’t play like that on Friday and expect to win,” said McClung.

Fairland — winners of the last two SJI titles — won the first regular season meeting against Chesapeake 69-55 two weeks ago.
