The Coal Grove Lady Hornets win over the Chesapeake Lady Panthers was as easy as one, two, three.

Coal Grove coach Nick Miller said his team needed to do three things in order to beat the Lady Panthers, and they did en route to a 44-24 Ohio Valley Conference win on Saturday.

“We did a nice job with the three things we wanted to take care of,” Miller.

“We didn’t want to let them get any second shots or get any baskets in transition and we didn’t want to let (Sarah) Mayo go off on us with a bunch of 3’s and we were able to do that.”

Jordyn Cox scored 13 points to lead a balanced Coal Grove offense. Danielle Carpenter and Chelsea Delong had 10 points each for the Lady Hornets (11-3, 5-1).

“Our balance was a big key for us. We had three players in double figures and another with seven,” said Miller.

Kimmie Bennett head nine points to lead Chesapeake (8-6, 2-4).

“We need to get things turned around and going in the right direction,” said Chesapeake coach Sammy Gue.

“Coal Grove had a great game plan coming in and they did a good job taking our girls’ games away. Offensively we struggled, but they had a lot to do with it.”

Cassie Rucker had a pair of baskets in the first quarter for Chesapeake and the game was tied 6-6.

But Cox scored 10 of her points in the second quarter as Coal Grove opened up an 18-10 halftime lead.

Carpenter had six points in the third quarter and the defense held Chesapeake to five points to build a 31-15 lead.

Abby Nance scored five of her seven points running the Lady Hornets’ spread offense in the fourth quarter as the Lady Hornets continued to extend the lead.

Bennett got seven points in the quarter for Chesapeake.
