Purdue coach Matt Painter wasn’t mystified that his team lost to Ohio State, 80-72 in overtime on Tuesday night.

After all, the 12th-ranked Boilermakers didn’t have third-leading scorer Robbie Hummel, while the Buckeyes got huge games from Evan Turner and William Buford.

‘‘It’s in the product. Those guys are fantastic,’’ Painter said. ‘‘You can’t allow Evan Turner to get to the basket or the free throw line 14 times. We did. But William Buford was amazing. That kid is good.’’

Turner scored six of his 26 points in overtime to help end the Boilermakers’ six-game winning streak and prevent them from moving into a tie for first place in the Big Ten with Michigan State.

Buford had 22 points on 10-of-14 shooting and fellow freshman B.J. Mullens added 17 points as the Buckeyes (16-5, 6-4) won their third straight.

‘‘Turner got going. Buford got going. Mullens had 17 and eight rebounds,’’ Painter said. ‘‘When you throw those three guys together, having that kind of a night, you’re probably going to get beat.’’

Purdue (17-5, 6-3) had not permitted an opponent to shoot better than 43 percent all season. The Buckeyes shot 60 percent.

Asked what was the secret formula for the Buckeyes, their coach Thad Matta smiled.

‘‘Honestly, I wish I knew,’’ he said. ‘‘For the most part, I thought we did a decent job of gutting it out, toughing it out, on shot selection and moving the basketball.’’

The 7-foot Mullens, who leads the Big Ten in shooting largely because most of his baskets are dunks, said the Buckeyes were unselfish.

‘‘We had to get the ball around,’’ he said. ‘‘That’s when we play our best offensive game — when we zip the ball around.’’

Turner interrupted him to add, ‘‘And just execute our offense. Those screens that guys were setting, even our guards. We just executed our offense and made sure we screened and got guys open. Pretty much with that, you have to throw the first punch.’’

JaJuan Johnson scored a career-high 30 points and Keaton Grant added 14 for Purdue, which was without Hummel, who has a hairline fracture in his back. He was cleared to play but never left the bench.

‘‘He just didn’t look good (in a Saturday win) against Michigan to me,’’ Painter said. ‘‘At times he looks like he’s making improvement, then other days he doesn’t.’’

With Hummel out of the lineup, the Buckeyes went big at times with Mullens and 6-8 wide-body Dallas Lauderdale to control the boards. The Buckeyes dominated the glass 36-19.

‘‘They kicked us on the glass,’’ Painter said.

With the score tied at 64 late in regulation, Purdue ran down the shot clock until Lewis Jackson drove the lane, missing a bank shot in traffic with 3 seconds left. Turner got the rebound, but his shot from halfcourt was well off the mark.

The Buckeyes pulled away in the overtime with an 8-0 run — four of the points from Turner, who also had 12 rebounds and seven assists.

In the overtime, Ohio State broke a 66-66 tie when Turner was fouled and made both free throws. Purdue missed a shot before Jon Diebler put up a shot in traffic — while falling down — that went in for a 70-66 lead. Johnson countered with two free throws to cut the lead to two.

Turner slashed through the lane and gingerly lofted a shot over a defender’s hand to make it 72-68. The Buckeyes then grabbed the rebound of a Purdue miss and hurried down, with Buford dunking to push the lead to six points with 47 seconds remaining.

Turner hit two free throws to end the run.

‘‘They got in a groove and we flat couldn’t stop them,’’ Painter said.

Purdue did early. The Buckeyes fell behind 10-2 in the opening 5 1/2 minutes, prompting Matta to call a quick timeout and point out the obvious to his charges.

‘‘Honestly, fellas, I don’t know if you knew this or not, but the game’s started,’’ Matta said he told them.
