Turning up the defense helped light up the scoreboard.

The Chesapeake Panthers used their defensive pressure to force 25 turnovers that triggered their fast-break offense in a 77-32 rout of the Rock Hill Redmen Wednesday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

The turnovers helped the Panthers make 34-of-62 field goal attempts including 24 layups.

“We needed to turn it up and to make them make mistakes,” said Panthers’ coach Ryan Davis. “We didn’t just want to pressure them, we wanted to make something happen and we did.”

Besides the 24 turnovers, Rock Hill was just 11-of-46 from the field for 24 percent.

“We’re not the type of team that can run up and down the court and we let ourselves get caught up in their tempo,” said Rock Hill coach Adam Simpson. “We didn’t shoot the ball well and we made too many bad passes.”

Chesapeake is now 13-3 overall and remains atop the OVC at 6-1.

After Chesapeake took a 6-0 lead, Rock Hill climbed right back in the game as Brandon Klaiber converted a three-point play and made a layup.

But Kyle Webb hit a 3-pointer at the 2:32 mark to give Chesapeake a 9-5 lead and the blitz was on.

A 13-7 lead at the end of the first quarter grew into a 37-18 halftime cushion. Webb scored 13 points in the quarter including three trifectas. Webb hit back-to-back triples and a steal and layup by Matt Angle made it 34-14 with 1:18 left in the half.

Nathan Copley had a layup to start the second half for Chesapeake and then Peter Hintz had three straight layups to make it 45-18. Trent Saunders and Hintz also made layups as the Panthers went on to take a 64-25 lead at the end of the quarter.

Webb finished with 23 points including five 3-pointers. Saunders had 11 points with Angle and Hintz scoring 10 each.

Klaiber had nine points and four rebounds to lead the Redmen (5-10, 2-5).
