When a team is looking for revenge, it tends to play well.

After losing 68-63 earlier this season on the road, the St. Joseph Flyers had one of their best games of the season as they got a measure of revenge with a 57-31 win over the South Gallia Rebels on Friday.

“We played pretty well defensively. We gave up 68 (at South Gallia), so that was a big improvement. That was our best team effort of the year on both ends of the floor,” said Flyers’ coach Kevin Sheridan.

The Flyers enjoyed their best game of the season from the field as they connected on 20-of-39 shots for 51 percent.

Although Sheridan was pleased with the effort, he did see some flaws. St. Joseph had 17 of their 22 turnovers in the second half.

“We turned it over too much and fouled too much, especially when we had the lead,” said Sheridan. “We got a little complacent in the second half, but you do that sometimes when you have a big lead.”

Chad Harvey scored 20 points in limited action to lead the Flyers (8-8). He also had six rebounds.

Caleb Blackburn got 10 points, five rebounds and four assists for the Flyers while Joey Basedow grabbed eight rebounds. Payton Blair added eight points, five assists and two steals despite being saddled with foul trouble.

Harvey scored five points while Joseph “The Shoe” Unger and Blackburn got four each as the Flyers went up 16-6 in the first quarter.

The defense held the Rebels to three points in the second quarter and the Flyers built a 28-9 halftime lead as Pat Gagai and Blair hit triples.

Harvey — who sat most of the second quarter in foul trouble — scored eight points in the third quarter and Blair had five more as St. Joseph pulled away to a comfortable 45-19 cushion.

A.J. McDaniels scored all five of his points in the third quarter for South Gallia.

In the fourth quarter, Tanner Riley went 4-of-4 from the line and Harvey got five more points before the emptied their bench.

Jacob Watson scored seven points of the Rebels’ 12 points in the quarter.

Watson led South Gallia (9-9) with 14 points.

The two teams meet on Monday, Feb. 23, at Wellston in the Division IV sectional tournament.
