Just like the weather, a basketball game can change in rapid fashion.
Things started out sunny for the Coal Grove Lady Hornets, but Lainee Clay began to rain down with 3-pointers as the Wheelersburg Lady Pirates came back to post a 54-44 win on Saturday in the Division III sectional finals.
“We started out pretty well, but they hit some 3s, we turned the ball over a few times in a row, and they capitalized on them and got the momentum,” said Lady Hornets’ coach Nick Miller.
Senior Jordyn Cox — who had 22 points in her final game — second seven points in the first quarter as Coal Grove took a 14-3 lead. But Clay hit a pair of 3-pointers that cut the deficit to 14-9.
Coal Grove struggled on offense in the second quarter as Cox scored all five of the team’s points. Sarah Schmidt and Kayla Bailey had four points each as Wheelersburg rallied to take a 26-19 halftime lead.
“We just didn’t play well. We got out of sync. We never found our rhythm on offense. But give credit to Wheelersburg. They played a nice game,” said Miller.
The Lady Pirates were up 35-27 after three quarters and pushed the lead to 11 in the fourth quarter.
Coal Grove chipped away as Cox scored eight points and cut the deficit to five points on two occasions.
But each time the Lady Hornets got close, Clay answered with a 3-pointers to thwart the comeback bid.
Besides Cox, Chelsea Delong had 12 points for the Lady Hornets who finished 16-5.
Clay scored 19 points and Schmidt 18 to pace Wheelersburg (11-10).
In the final sectional tournament game of the afternoon, Oak Hill beat Portsmouth 75-28.
