ASHLAND, Ky. — For the second time in less than a month, someone has threatened to jump from a bridge between Ashland, Ky., and Coal Grove.

At approximately 4 p.m. Wednesday, Ashland police officer Richard Bohanon was alerted to a jumper on the bridge.

By the time Bohannon arrived, Johnathon J. Braxton, of Ashland, had his right leg over the bridge rail above the freezing river water.

When Bohanon tried to pull Braxton to safety, he was uncooperative and began resisting assistance and tried to continue his attempt to jump, according to a statement from the Ashland Police Department.

Summit, Ky., Federal Correctional Institution Warden Kenny Cauley and his associate Dewey Derifield, who is also Perry Township Fire Chief, were driving by, saw what was happening and stopped to offer Bohannon assistance with Braxton. Two other Ashland police officers also responded and were involved in a brief altercation on the service ladder platform with the subject as he was being brought to safety, according to information from the police department.

Braxton was taken to King’s Daughters Medical Center for treatment.
