DORIS BAUER

Doris Parker Bauer, 98, died on Monday, March 23, 2009, at her home in Ironton. She was born Aug. 30, 1910 in Ironton, the daughter of Harry Courtney Parker and Alyce Cole Parker.
She graduated in 1928 from Ironton High School, where she was a member of the National Honor Society. At The Ohio State University she was elected to the Phi Beta Kappa Society, and graduated in 1932 with a B. A. degree in French, with honors.
She took additional courses at Ohio University, in education, and then taught elementary students for several years in the Ironton city schools. She married in 1941 and lived with her family in Upper Arlington, a suburb of Columbus, in the 1950s and 1960s. In 1974 she returned to Ironton to live.
A gifted and dedicated pianist, she had to give up music in mid-life after a severe hearing loss. She maintained a lively interest in languages, the arts, and national and world affairs until the end of her life.
Doris Bauer was a charter member of the Ironton Junior Women’s Club and of the local chapter of the American Society of University Women, and also belonged to the Century Club.
Christened in 1911 by the Rev. W. H. Hampton, she was a lifetime member of Christ Episcopal Church.
She was preceded in death by an infant son, by her brothers, Raymond H. and Alfred T. Parker, and her sister Mabel Downs.
She is survived by her son, Parker Bauer and his wife Charlotte of Ocala, Fla.; her son, Robert Bauer of Missoula Mont.; her granddaughters, Katie Bauer of Washington, D. C., and Stephanie and Valerie Bauer of Ocala, Fla.; her niece, Ann Evans and husband Jim Evans; two grand-nieces, Andrea Downs and Becky Miller; and her close friend Peggy Greene.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday at the Christ Episcopal Church in Ironton with the Rev. Sallie Schisler and the Rev. Robert Thomas officiating. Entombment will follow in Woodland Abbey in Woodland Cemetery. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Sunday at Hayes-Phillips Funeral Home, 509 South Sixth Street, Ironton, Ohio.
