WAYNE, W.Va. — There is some fight in those Lady Dragons.

Down but not out, the Fairland Lady Dragons tied the game in the seventh inning and pushed across the winning run in the 10th inning as they beat the Wayne Lady Pioneers 4-3 Wednesday.

“We had a gut check,” said Fairland coach Glenn Dillon. “We played with a lot of heart and we hope it continues.”

The Lady Pioneers took a 1-0 lead in the first inning only to have Fairland tied the game in the second on a solo home run by Sashe Burcham.

Wayne got single runs in the third and fourth innings to lead 3-1, but the Lady Dragons rallied to tie the game in the top of the seventh inning.

Mackenzie Rucker reached on a fielder’s choice and Burcham was hit by a pitch. With two outs, Sam Ball struck out but was safe when the third strike was dropped and both runners came around to score.

Fairland (1-1) got the winning run in the top of the 10th when Kasee Fulton and Keri Pinkerman singled, both moved up when Ashley Witt grounded out, and Stormie Spitzer delivered a clutch run-scoring single on an 0-2 count.

Burcham went the first five innings before giving way to Ashley Witt who finished up to get the win.

Burcham went 2-3 with an RBI to lead the Lady Dragons’ offense.
