Pedro man shot in dispute

PEDRO — One man remains in an area hospital Thursday night and another is in the Lawrence County Jail following an alleged argument that ended in a shooting.

Pedro resident William J. Scherer, 37, is in stable condition at St. Mary’s Medical Center following an incident that occurred on County Road 4 at approximately 3:15 p.m. Thursday, according to a release from the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff’s deputies arrested George M. Massie on charges of felonious assault in connection with the shooting that left Scherer with two gunshot wounds in his upper torso. Scherer was shot once in left shoulder and once in left side of the neck, according to the release.

Scherer was alert and named Massie as the suspect, alleging the two got into an argument on County Road 4 near the intersection of County Road 16.

Scherer was able to leave the scene by driving his truck to Tipton’s Mini-Mart on State Route 93. He was treated by SEOEMS and Lifeflighted to St. Mary’s.

The window of the truck was blown out, a witness said.

Sheriff’ deputies investigated the scene and the vehicle. Massie was later interviewed and arrested at the home of his parents.

Massie is being held at the Lawrence County Jail. He will be arraigned Monday in Ironton Municipal Court.
