The two most veteran teams did what was expected: battle for first place.

The South Point Pointers managed to slip past the Fairland Lady Dragons by six points as they won the Ironton Invitational track meet Thursday.

South Point had 132 points as Kayla Fletcher scored 30 points to finish runner-up for high point honors. Fairland racked up 126 points.

Youthful Ironton with just two seniors gave a solid showing with 114 points.

“It was a good meet. South Point and Fairland are both strong teams and they did well,” said Ironton coach Tim Thomas. “I was pleased with our team. We’ve got a bunch of freshmen and a handful of upper classmen and we competed.”

Portsmouth Notre Dame was fourth with 51 points followed by Coal Grove with 45, Chesapeake 34 and Rock Hill had 14, all by Ashton Brammer.

Fletcher won the 100- and 200-meter dashes, was second in the long jump. Teammate Ericka Leighty won the long jump and high jump.

Ironton’s Lorna Ceaser won the shot put and Taylor Hacker claimed first place in the 3200-meter run.

Megan Brooks won the pole vault and Jordan Aldridge the 100-and 300-meter hurdles for Fairland.

Coal Grove’s Chelsea Delong had a personal-best distance (112-4) to win the discus.
