Dragons turn back Pioneers, 5-3

WAYNE, W.Va. — This is one time when having a stroke is a good thing.

The Fairland hitters were “stroking” the ball to the tune of 10 hits as the Dragons beat the Wayne Pioneers 5-3 Friday night.

“We had 10 hits and we hit two or three bullets that were caught. I was pretty pleased with the way we stroked the ball tonight,” said Fairland coach Roger Snyder.

“Wayne has a pretty good team, so I felt good about this win.”

Tyler Thackson was 2-4 to lead the Fairland offense and back to combine two-hit pitching of Tyler Godby and Robbie Easterling.

The Dragons got a run in the first inning when Zach Jordan singled, moved up on a ground out and came home when Thackston singled.

Fairland scored two more in the second inning to lead 3-0.

Fisher singled with two outs and Chris Ward had an RBI double. Jordan singled to drive in the second run.

Wayne got a run in the bottom of the inning, but the Dragons

Thackston doubled, Godby walked, Zach Matasich had a run-scoring single, and Godby scored when the Dragons hit into a double play.

The Pioneers got two more unearned runs in the third and Robbie Easterling came on and retired 12 of the 13 batters he faced to earn the win.

Fairland (7-1) visits South Gallia on Monday and Rock Hill on Tuesday.
