Flyers rally past PND, 8-5

PORTSMOUTH — Pat Gagai gave his own version of hit and run.

Gagai’s bat and baserunning helped the St. Joseph Flyers rally to beat the Portsmouth Notre Dame Titans 8-5 Wednesday.

“Pat Gagai came up big. He knocked in two runs, he ran the bases well and set up some scoring plays,” said Flyers’ coach Greg Bryant.

The Flyers got a run in the second when Gagai walked, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by T.J. Young and then he stole home.

St. Joseph got a run in the fourth when Gagai was hit by pitch, stole second, took third on a wild pitch and scored on a ground out by Young.

Notre Dame scored five times in the fourth, but the Flyers got within 5-4 with two runs in the fifth.

Payton Blair doubled, Chad Harvey and Tanner Riley walked and Gagai singled home two runs.

St. Joseph took the lead with three runs in the sixth.

Levi Hopkins walked, Blair singled and Harvey doubled to score pinch-runner Anthony Whaley and Blair. Caleb Blackburn walked and Riley had an RBI single.

The Flyers got an insurance run in the seventh when Gagai walked, stole second and third, and scored on a throwing error.

Blackburn got the win in relieft as he struck out five, walked two and did not give up a hit.

St. Joseph (9-0) hosts Harvest Christian on Thursday and Maysville (Ky.) St. Patrick at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
