SOUTH POINT — Speed and defense.
Behind a record-setting performance by Ericka Leighty and a solid defense, the South Point Lady Pointers beat the Fairland Lady Dragons 10-3 Friday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.
Leighty needed one stolen base but stole four bases to give her 78 for her career and enabled her to qualify for the Ohio high school state record book.
“She is a senior and this is a goal she has been working towards since her freshman year,” said Lady Pointers coach Steve Baise.
“She’s been batting leadoff since her freshman year and does a great job setting the pace for her teammates.”
Hannan Huron scattered 11 hits to get the win as the defense backed her with just one error.
“I am proud of the girls for playing solid defense tonight. Hannah Huron did a great job keeping the ball in the zone and letting her defense back her up,” said Baise.
Fairland got a run in the top of the first inning when Mackenzie Rucker and Sashe Burcham singled and Sam Ball hit into a fielder’s choice.
The Lady Pointers answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning.
Leighty singled, stole second and third and scored on a hit by Amy Lien. After Lien stole second, Tausha Collins had an RBI single.
Fairland tied the game in the second when Kasee Fulton walked, moved up on ground outs and scored on a base hit.
South Point regained the lead with two runs in the second.
Ashley Goodall and Ashley Smith singled to put runners on the corners. After Smith stole second, Leighty grounded out for a run and Courtney Koukos had an RBI single.
The Lady Pointers added two runs in the third and three more in the fourth to build a 9-2 lead and coast to the win.
Leighty finished 3-4, Collins and Goodall 2-3 and Lien 2-4.
Bias went 2-3 and Sashe Burcham and Ashley Witt 2-4 to pace Fairland (4-7, 2-4).
South Point plays at Chesapeake on Monday in a key OVC game.
