McDERMOTT — The Symmes Valley Lady Vikings are a bunch of procrastinators.

But coach Jeff “Odie” Estep doesn’t mind as long as they win.

The Lady Vikings beat Portsmouth West 6-5 in the bottom of the 10th inning, then came back and beat Waverly in the bottom of the seventh on Saturday in the Northwest Softball Classic.

“Those were a couple of nice wins. Our younger kids stepped up and played with a lot of grit and a lot of heart,” said Lady Vikings coach Jeff “Odie” Estep.

“Libby (Ash) and Erica (Corn) did a great job of pitching. West had us on the ropes three different innings and we were able to shut them down. It was the same thing with Waverly.”

In the first game, West took a 2-0 lead in the third only to have the Vikings score five runs in the fifth.

Kayla Ross singled, Chelsea Keathley was safe on an error and Britney Foster was hit by a pitch. Two outs later, Nikki Nance walked to force in a run and Jessie Morris unloaded a three-run triple.

West tied the game in the sixth and scored a run in the 10th to go up 5-4.

But the Lady Vikings rallied for two runs in the bottom of the inning.

Nance led off with a double and Morris reached on an error. Chelsea Wall then singled home Nance to tie the game. Ash walked and Ross hit a long fly ball over the leftfielder’s head to score Morris.

In the second game, Waverly led 3-0 going into the bottom of the seventh inning when the Lady Vikings scored all four of their runs.

Ross reached on an error and Haily Pelletier walked to start the inning. Foster singled to load the bases and Ross and Pelletier both scored on wild pitches. Corn hit into a fielder’s choice and Nance hit into a fielder’s choice.

On the player, Foster got in a rundown and a throwing error on the play scored the tying and winning runs.
