Pointers rally to edge Panthers, 6-5

CHESAPEAKE — The South Point Pointers found what the Chesapeake Panthers lost.
South Point scored five runs in the seventh inning to rally past the Panthers 6-5 Monday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.
“We just found a way to lose it,” said Panthers’ coach Joe Waugh.
“We had opportunities to make plays on more than one occasion, but we didn’t make the plays.”
The Panthers were their own worst enemy with six errors that led to six unearned runs.
South Point got a run in the first inning when Jordan Fletcher reached second base on an error, took third on a passed ball and scored on a throwing error.
Chesapeake came back to take a 2-1 lead in the second inning.
Travis Zimmerman walked, Colton Lindsey reached on a fielder’s choice and stole second, and Gabe Freyre tripled in a run and came home on a throwing error.
The lead went to 5-1in the third inning.
Brandon Noble and Matt Angle singled, Wes Lezu had a sacrifice bunt, Zimmerman was walked and Lindsey singled as all three runs scored.
The score remained that way until the Pointers got five unearned runs in the seventh inning.
Caleb Esque singled, Kyle Dickess walked and Jacob Seagraves was safe on an error as a run scored. Josh Esque went to second on an error as two runs scored. Stephen McClure singled home Esque and a throwing error sent McClure to second.
A dropped third strike allowed McClure to reach third base and Winkler singled to drive in the winning run.
Chesapeake (3-11, 1-6) hosts Wayne, W.Va., on Tuesday.
