PEDRO — The Rock Hill Redmen were glad to be back on the field, even if their defense failed to join them.
David Turley pitched a five-hitter and the Redmen overcame five errors to beat the Coal Grove Hornets 5-4 Monday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.
“It was nice to play again. I wasn’t sure how well we’d play after being off for three days and it was obvious our defense was feeling the effects,” said Redmen coach Barry Litteral.
“But we hit the ball pretty well and Turley threw a nice game.
Turley struck out 11, one one and none of the runs were earned.
Coal Grove took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
Daniel “Oakie” Haynes singled, stole second and took third on a throwing error. He came home when Jake Murphy reached on an error. Murphy scored when Wayne Sparks was safe on an error.
Rock Hill got a run in the bottom of the inning when Josh Malone doubled and Shane Russell singled.
The Hornets got the run back in the third with a familiar script. Haynes singled, stole second, took third on a throwing error and came home on a hit by Shannon Goodwin.
The Redmen came right back in the bottom of the inning to get a run on a double by Mitchell Davenport and Jeremy Blagg’s base hit.
Coal Grove got its final run in the fourth. Corey Willis was safe on an error, advanced on a passed ball and Aaron Conley singled.
But Rock Hill rallied for three runs in the sixth inning to lead 5-4.
Turley walked, Malone singled and Davenport had a two-run triple. Blagg beat out an infield hit as the run scored.
Malone was 2-2, Blagg 2-3, and Russell and Davenport 2-4.
