Flyers use scoring opportunities to rout Tartans, 20-7

SCIOTOVILLE — The St. Joseph Flyers use whatever they can to score runs.

The Flyers parlayed nine hits and 16 walks into a 20-7 win over the Sciotoville East Tartans on Wednesday.

“We’re making the most of or opportunities and we’re starting to hit the ball a little better. It was nice to be able to play a lot of players,” said Flyers’ coach Greg Bryant.

St. Joseph (14-0) was led at the plate by Pat Gagai who was 2-2, Payton Blair 2-4 and Chad Harvey 2-5.

The Flyers took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning.

Blair doubled, stole third, Caleb Blackburn walked and stole second, Tanner Riley hit into a fielder’s choice for a run, Gagai singled and stole second, and East uncorked two wild pitches.

East came back to take a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the first inning, but the Flyers scored five times in the second inning to take the lead for good.

Cody Blackburn single, Levi Hopkins walked, a passed ball moved the runners up and Harvey grounded out for a run. Caleb Blackburn walked, Riley was safe on an error, Gagai and T.J. Young singled in runs and Joseph “The Shoe” Unger walked to force in a run.

The lead went to 10-4 in the third.

Hopkins walked, Blair had a sacrifice bunt, a wild pitch moved up the runner and Harvey grounded out. Caleb Blackburn walked, took second on a passed ball, Riley singled and a wild pitch scored Blackburn.

East got two runs back in the bottom of the inning, but the Flyers scored four in the fourth.

Unger singled, Cody Blackburn was safe on an error, Hopkins walked and Blair and Harvey each singled in a run. Caleb Blackburn grounded out for a run and Blair scored when the ball got loose on a collision at first base.

The Flyers used seven walks, a hit batsman and a hit by Harvey to score six runs in the fifth inning.

The Flyers (14-0) visits South Gallia on Thursday.
