Chapman’s perfect game keys Lady Panthers’ win
CHESAPEAKE — Allison Chapman took matters into her own hands.
Chapman struck out 12 of the 15 batters she faced as she pitched a five-inning perfect game and the Chesapeake Lady Panthers remained unbeaten with a 10-0 win over the Coal Grove Lady Hornets on Monday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.
“She threw pretty well. She worked ahead in the count and got to pitch from a pitcher’s count instead of a hitter’s count,” said Chesapeake coach Aaron Rice.
Sarah Mayo went 3-4 and Courtney Heffner was 2-3 with four runs batted in to back Chapman’s pitching.
Chesapeake jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Nikki Lindsey walked, Mayo singled and Heffner had a two-out, two-run triple.
In the third. Mayo was safe on an error, stole second base, took third on an error and scored when Heffner grounded out and it was 3-0.
The Lady Panthers pushed across four runs in the fourth inning.
Sarah Rice had a two-out single and Chapman and Lindsey reached on errors as a run scored. Mayo tripled to drive in two runs, Sidney Boyle walked and Heffner had an RBI single.
Chesapeake ended the game with three runs in the fifth inning.
Casey Kirk singled, Myky Harmon and Chapman walked to load the bases, and Mayo delivered a two-run single. Boyle then doubled home the final run that created the mercy rule win.
Chesapeake (20-0, 10-0) travels to Huntington, W.Va., on Tuesday.
